Arctic Response delivers Advanced Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) training that exceeds the national criteria established by National Search and Rescue Secretariat (NSS).
The primary focus of this course is to develop planning and leadership skills necessary to enact the strategic search plan into safe, thorough and effective search on the ground. Additionally, this program provides candidates with added insights into the various roles and techniques necessary to run sustained, multi-agency search operations.
Candidates of this program must have sound search training and experience and a reasonable level of physical fitness coming into this program. As upcoming leaders, candidates gain the intimate knowledge of time and resource appreciation for various types of search by planning and doing. Candidates gain the tools and practice to receive, evolve and deliver instructions between the overhead team and their assigned search team members. Developing leadership qualities necessary to prepare, supervise and lead searchers through difficult conditions and fatigue are core to this training.
The length of an Arctic Response Advanced GSAR program varies somewhat based on the number of students and their threshold standard of training and experience at the Fundamentals level; and small party leadership roles. On average, this course is run over five training days. The minimum time requirement for this training is 6 hours of classroom training and 36 hours of field training, which must include an overnight.
